Separation completely different from alkyl group-type stationary phases such as C18 is achieved due to the interactions of π electrons (π-π and CH-π interactions).

"Biphenyl" has two benzene rings twisted at approximately 45 degrees, and the biphenyl group exhibits different separation behavior from a single phenyl group as a core-shell. Even when using an aqueous mobile phase that does not contain organic solvents, there is no change in retention. The retention of polar compounds like caffeine increases significantly.
